Muay Thai

Muay Thai is the national sport, pastime and passion of Thailand. It’s also the single most devastating and complete striking style in the world. Punches, kicks, knees, elbows, clinching, defense . . . it’s all there. The technique is surprisingly simple, and rock solid. Adam has trained in Canada and Thailand under (Ajarn Chai), and at ZUMA you can learn this awesome martial art in the way it was meant to be taught.

Conditioning is essential for Muay Thai training, and in both beginner and advanced classes you will experience what is possibly the most intense and enjoyable workout of your life. Every class you’ll work on new things; hitting the thai pads and focus mitts, learning new combinations, mastering your technique. Once you feel comfortable enough, you can test yourself against other students in light sparring drills and in the ring. All of this is done in a safe and sportsmanlike manner that will leave you pumped and excited for your next class.

Women’s Kickboxing

What most students of our Women’s Only Kickboxing class will tell you generally revolves around two ideas:(1) ZUMA’s Kickboxing System is awesome for muscle toning, particularly in the arms and legs, while getting you into top shape; and (2) because the kickboxing classes change daily in techniques and routine, they break up the monotony of those repetitive aerobics classes.

Our goal-oriented program will help you get into great shape! The program will teach you how to stretch, hold your guard and use pads. You will really learn to push yourself, and have so much fun, some claim it’s addictive. With our special Thai Kickboxing drills you will learn functional skills and increase your fitness level and self-confidence, improve your concentration, and meet lots of great new people.

Classes ranging in level from beginner to more advanced run throughout the week. No matter which class you attend, you will be participating with awesome people and having fun! During every class you will learn how to stretch and prevent injury while working up a great sweat. We provide the motivation, equipment and fun; all you have to do is show up.

Kid’s Program

At ZUMA, our kids have ULTIMATE fun! Unlike many traditional martial arts, ZUMA’s ultimate kids enjoy learning a practical and healthy martial art that works. Our mixed martial arts system will give your child confidence, discipline, and real self-defense skills. We’re firm believers in training our kids with a strong emphasis on fitness, agility, and proper nutrition. Your child will learn a variety of martial arts styles, including Muay Thai, boxing and wrestling, from first class instructors.

Our ultimate kids enjoy the freedom to have fun in a safe and positive environment, which helps them to succeed on the mat, and in their every day life!

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (a.k.a. Carlson Gracie Jiu Jitsu) is a grappling art that was made popular in North America by the legendary Gracie family. BJJ concentrates on dominating your opponent by using angles, leverage, and superior body positioning to control your opponent’s body movement. A person that has gained a superior position is much more able to safely apply a finishing hold or to start striking, allowing a smaller person to defeat a much larger one.

At ZUMA, we have the honour and privilege to be associated with Marcus Soares of Vancouver, a 7th degree black belt of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and a student of Carlson Gracie. Adam is a student of Marcus’, and is very excited to pass on the tradition of excellence to his students. Oh yeah, and the gi’s look pretty cool, too.

Mixed Martial Arts

While Mixed Martial Arts is a relatively new term for lots of people, at ZUMA it’s a lifestyle choice. Adam and the instructors at ZUMA live and breathe MMA. By combining the awesome, rock-solid striking technique of Muay Thai, with the supremely practical concepts of wrestling and the ingenious submissions of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, we’re offering you world-class instruction in MMA, the modern evolution of martial arts.

We all know that people come in different shapes and sizes, and just because a certain style and technique works for one person, doesn’t mean it’s the best fit for you. Some students prefer to take the fight to the ground; others keep their distance and strike with punches and kicks. The instructors at ZUMA will help you discover your own personal style; developing your strengths, and improving your weaknesses.

Wrestling

Wrestling is taught on Saturdays at Zuma by 3x Canadian Wrestling Champion and former National Team Member Mike Sullivan. The wrestling is for both the beginner and for high level wrestlers/athletes. The wrestling classes in compasses the basic/fundamental building blocks of wrestling to moves and set ups used by National, International and Olympic wrestlers.

Judo

Judo is an Olympic sport originating from Japan that was developed by Jigoro Kano. When competing in Judo the goal is to throw your opponent on to their back, hold them down or submit them with a heavy emphasis on the throwing aspect. At Zuma we recognize the value of controlling an opponent on the feet and on the ground – we develop complete competitors. Come try our Judo class led by Cam Inouye, everyone is welcome.
