Week 1 complete

So week 1 of my training camp for Alexis Davis is complete. On Monday I officially signed to fight Alexis Davis in Columbus, Ohio on March 3. I'm going to be treating this fight like a title fight as I've been guaranteed by Strikeforce that the winner of our fight gets the next title fight...which is exactly what I want.

This past week was fairly common to my training camp: lots of conditioning, wrestling, sparring, grappling and strength/speed work. I unfortunately wasn't able to PB on my Squat Clean for the 3rd week in a row, but overall a great week :)
On a side note, if you're looking for a new game to play to pass the time: Boogle!!! I can't stop playing this 3 minute word game :)

Adorable Student!

Here is one of  my ZUMA students. Not only is he adorable, he is one of the most enthusiastic 6-yr-olds around… AND a great listener! I’ve been teaching him for about 10 months and the other day he came to class like this:

Isn’t he the sweetest? He also told me that when he has his first MMA fight as an adult he will do a BIG ZUMA LOL

10 More Days!!!

10 Days out is always a great place to be. There are still a few hard training sessions with the ZUMA team (www.facebook.com/zuma.tv), my weight is at a good place and it's getting close to a countdown in the single digits! Everything is coming together really well.

Megumi Yabushita is NO JOKE. She's been around the fight game for a really long time and has fought a who's-who of females in MMA. I am prepared for a tough fight, but excited for the challenge and for the opportunity to fight for Victoria. I'm excited to cut weight for 2 reasons:

1) I won't have to drink 10L of water, thus making bathroom stops every 20 min

2) I can find some tasty garlic cheese bread!

I'll keep you posted on how things are going over the next week. If you have any questions about anything (preferably fight related) post them to the comments section and I'll try and cover them in my next blog. Also, if you still need tickets they are going fast. The 3rd ZUMA section is now gone and the 4th is starting to go fast, too. Make sure you contact me to reserve however many you need, ASAP!

Thanks to FullTilt Poker, Drako, Popeyes Supplements Victoria, and 100 Rounds for their support and sponsorship. I do have a few spots remaining if anyone is interested, but contact me right away.

Enjoy your night!

Great night, GREATER prank!

Not only did I have a fantastic training session, my coach also played a mean - yet awesome - prank on the AFC owner. We were grappling with punches and my leather gloves left black dye around my knuckles. Adam took a picture and sent it over to Darren Owen from AFC telling him that I badly broke my hand, but still wanted to fight.

Within 2 minutes Adam's phone was ringing with none other than Darren. Adam played it up and let Darren freak out, ending the conversation by saying he had to take me to the hospital. We let Darren sweat it out for about 5-10 min before sending him a message relaying that wouldn't it be funny if it wasn't broken and instead was leather dye?

Who says you can't have fun and train hard at the same time?! :)

In case you aren't up to speed: I'm preparing for my upcoming fight vs Megumi Yabushita (19-17) at AFC in Victoria on April 2, 2011. If you need tickets send me a message or call me at ZUMA (250) 475-2885

Diego fights today!

I'm really excited for today. Despite waking up in COLD Edmonton and hearing about the further devastation of last night's earthquakes and tsunamis in Japan, it's going to be a great day. My ZUMA teammate, Diego Wilson, is taking on Josh Hill for the Aggression 135lb Title.

Diego really is a crazy Filipino...and I expect nothing less from him tonight in his fight. He's ready to go: great cardio, great technical ability and a craziness to his fighting that is hard to prepare for. The Aggression card will be shown on tape delay (by a week or 2) on The Score. But I'll update everyone as the day progresses.

Best of luck to Diego Wilson and our coach, Adam Zugec, for what is sure to be an amazingly entertaining fight!

Upcoming Events!

Unfortunately I still don’t know when I – personally – will have my next fight, but there are many others whom I’m excited for. First, I will be heading to Mexico next week for my coach’s wedding (of course the date will officially be the “Day of Love” Feb 14). While many of you may know that I am quite pale and are excited at the prospect of my skin no longer reflecting light, I feel like I may disappoint you. I will either come back the same shade of white or a vibrant red – I’m hoping the former.

There should be some fun people in Mexico, as some of my training partners, as well as Denis Kang, will also be heading down. I’m hoping to train at least once (preferably twice) per day and then I’m not sure what else I will do.

We currently have Diego Wilson preparing for a title fight in Aggression on Mar 11, and then there are 2 fight cards – Battlefield and AFC – that are Mar 26 and Apr 2, respectively. There are many possibilities for our fighters and I’m hoping to see Nick Driedger, Tarek Gebali, Connor Wood and Ryan Janes compete in one of these events. Also, Denis Kang is going to be headlining Battlefield in Nanaimo. Before those events happen, there is a BJJ/grappling tournament in Vancouver on Mar 5 that should have a good number of the ZUMA team competing.

All in all, it’s going to be a busy couple of months. Hopefully, I will have a fight somewhere in there, too. I think the next logical Strikeforce fight for me would be Liz Carmouche…so let’s make it happen!

New Year Update

I've been a little behind on updating my blog - and for that I apologize. So much, yet so little has been going..but here it goes anyway. For the remainder of the holiday I mostly just trained (lighter than normal but still 1-2 sessions per day), ate relatively well, and hung out with Rhino. On New Year's I got the pleasure of hanging out with most of my team - and then dropping them home at various times until about 4am :)

The first week back to my normal schedule has been really great. I like routine, and I like staying busy, so - as I said before - it's been great. The past week has had some fun, hard training sessions: Tuesday striking with Nick, Wednesday BJJ with Sean, Thursday a marathon roll with Connor then some boxing, Friday some awesome wrestling with Connor, Diego and Tarek and then yesterday some boxing with takedown with Connor. Again, lots of fun minus the head to head collision with Connor during a double takedown attempt!

I'm still waiting to find out for sure what is going on with my upcoming fights for the year - but staying positive and hoping for March/April. Well, that's it for me for now. I'm going to enjoy the rest of my Sunday and I hope you all do the same.
